There was (and still is?) a drag culture outside of ball, Harvey Fierstein’s *Torch Song Trilogy*, as a trenchant example, having been a hit only four years before *Paris Is Burning* was released. That version, the “I don’t give a fuck who you are, Mary” version, could still be dangerous if it lets itself be.

Then again, I think it’s been about 30 years since people started watching Rocky Horror unironically, so we’re probably all screwed.
