A spatchcocked chicken looks like a fertility goddess
Skylar Aung-Thwin endures the passion of the grocery shopper
Discordia does not, it turns out, hate everything. Every other week, we share a piece of work from some artists who've earned our respect and affection.
This week, we’re joined by Montreal multidisciplinary artist Skylar “dangertape” Aung-Thwin, who shares a short poem.
There is art that moves us, and there is art that moves with us. This is Fellow Travellers.
The Temptation of the Saint in Me at the Market of Fleas
At the supermarket Hungry for things beyond my understanding Where a spatchcocked chicken Looks like a fertility goddess. Paranoia romances me Into thinking I’m being sold Not just quick-dinner but The shrink-wrapped Pear-shaped proportions of balance. I graze these aisles for inconvenience; To face the Urges Like the Temptation of the Saint in Me At the Market of Fleas Where everything is cumbersome & ripe with the cross-contaminated meaning Of many a hoarder’s love. Instant heirloom, minute-meal It’s half a dozen in One and 6 in the Other Crying different types of egg Abundance screams in green-wash: ORGANIC? FREE-RANGE? OR FREE-RUN? GRAIN-FED? RESTAURANT-STYLE? (I reach at random for CAGE-FREE)
SKYLAR ‘dangertape’ AUNG-THWIN paints w/ sound and sings w/ color and draws w/ words… She assumes you. “The Temptation…” was originally published in Skylar’s zine (l’un) ONE (comme) VS/AS (contre) OTHER (l’autre). Check the link to read it, and explore more of her visual and literary work.
